According to the Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu, Surfline Ghana, an 4G LTE company, is planning to cease operations due to costs of operations.

According to the Minister of Communications in a radio interview, Surfline Ghana has been looking for strategic investments and partnerships to help with increased costs of operations and debt.
The 4G LTE provider went dark earlier this year with subscribers unable to use the service.

“Over the years they have had challenges . . . we have been aware they are looking for strategic investments and partnerships. We’ve been helping them a lot but the conversations didn’t materialize . . . so for now their expenditures and debts outweigh their revenues and cost of providing services.
Even though they shouldn’t have shut down their data centres without reference to the regulator, I have heard they’ve done that . . . so I have asked NCA to work with them to minimize the impact on their subscribers . . . it is in the process of folding up” – Ursula Owusu, Minister of Communications.

Surfline Ghana entered the Ghanaian marketplace in 2014. The company was the first to offer 4G LTE to consumers.
Since then, the company has faced competition from MTN (which launched its 4G service in 2016), as well as Vodafone who also offered 4G services a couple of years ago.
