At 37, Asamoah Gyan is hanging up his boots for good. Ghana’s all-time top scorer and Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup, the former Black Stars captain announced his retirement on Tuesday.
“It’s time to hang up the shirt and the boots in glory”, he said in a post shared on social networks. Asamoah Gyan won 109 caps for his country, including spells in Ligue 1, the Premier League, Serie A, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, and was crowned champion three times with his Emirati club Al Ain, as well as being named African Player of the Year in 2010. Many still remember his missed penalty against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup, which could have enabled Ghana to become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final.
